Wellcome to Taprobane Jems
ZIRCON
Zircon is valued for its
brilliance, fire (the ability to disperse light into its spectral colors), and
high refractive index, which gives it excellent sparkle and shine. It's often
used as a gemstone in jewelry, particularly as a substitute for diamond due to
its similar appearance.
In Sri Lanka, zircon is commonly
found in gem gravels, particularly in alluvial deposits, which are deposits
formed by the action of rivers and streams. These deposits often contain a mix
of gemstones, including zircon, sapphire, ruby, and others. Traditional mining
methods, such as panning and hand sorting, are still used in some areas to
extract zircon and other gemstones from these deposits.
